The UK accounts for some 80% of the European online gambling market, with a large number of women taking a flutter online, according to new research.
The survey, conducted by comparison and Switching service uSwitch.com, also found that 18 to 29 year-olds use the Internet to gamble online more than any other age group.
The age group accounts for 14% of the 3,960,000 home Internet users who admit to using the net for gambling.
With celebrity endorsement of online casino advertising campaigns, such as Caprice as the face of an online poker room, and increased television coverage, the popularity of online gambling has soared over recent years, uSwitch said.
Currently, British players make up about four in five European users, and 30-40% are female players, compared with only 5% of women players in the offline world. |
