History of the game Craps

The origin of the game of craps, like many other gambling games is often debated. Some think the game has an Arabian origin since the Arabic world for dice is al zar. Others claim that Sir William of Tyre, an Englishman, along with his knights invented the game as they were planning an attack on Hazarth castle.

Most scholars credit the games origin to a game called Hazard; which members of the European aristocracy played in the 18th century. The game made its way across the pond shortly thereafter via the French Louisiana colony of Arcadia.

Down in New Orleans, Bernard de Mandeville took the game of hazard, refined it, and transformed the game into recognizable version of craps. The game was very popular on the Mississippi riverboats, as many hardcore gamblers created systems to beat the game – or so they thought.

John Winn introduced a rule that allowed punters to bet on the player as well as the croupier or the casino. For his contributions to the game of Craps Mr. Winn is recognized as the father of the modern game.

Today there are basically two kinds of craps, street craps and bank craps. Most often you will find that people are playing street craps as it is less formal and the betting process is much simpler. Craps played in casinos is bank craps and the betting is considered to be a bit more complicated. Where in street craps players are playing against players, in bank craps you are playing against the house.

Over the last 20 or so years the game of craps has lost a bit of its popularity as a result the esteem of digital slot machines. However more recently the game of craps is showing signs of a comeback; possibly thanks in part to the ability to play the game online.
