New Jersey's incoming acting governor is pushing a plan to introduce slot machines to at least one of New Jersey's horse racing tracks.

State Sen. Richard J. Codey plans to introduce a budget next year that would count on $275 million from the new slot machine revenue to help close a projected $4 billion budget deficit, The Record of Bergen County reported in Thursday's newspapers.

Codey is set to become acting governor Tuesday after Gov. James E. McGreevey's resignation becomes official.

The measure comes in part as a response to moves to put slot machines or video lottery terminals at tracks in the border states of Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York.

"For us to put our heads in the sand is absurd," Codey told the newspaper. "The person from northern New Jersey who says he's not going to go to Atlantic City because I can go over through the Lincoln Tunnel and play slot machines will say, 'Wait a minute. Why should I go to N.Y. now? I can go over to the Meadowlands."'
