Slot Machine History

The invention of slot machines is credited to Charles Fey and dates back to 1895. Mr. Fey refined his initial innovation in 1907 when he teamed with Mills Novelty Company who manufactured the "Mills Liberty Bell." The Liberty Bell featured a cast iron case and initially had cast iron feet.

This "Liberty Bell" is the primary ancestor to all contemporary American slot machines and its fundamental design continues to be used in mechanical gaming devices today. The mechanical devices with three old-style reels holding symbols have evolved into microprocessor-controlled devices with numerous spinning reels holding hundreds of symbols.

It was during the 1930's that slot machines began to become very popular across the United States, and in the late 40's Bugsy Siegel added slot machines to his Flamingo Hilton Hotel located in Las Vegas. Siegel originally installed the games to entertain the wives and girlfriends of high rollers, he quickly discovered that the revenue from the slot machines matched that of the table games.

Slot machines today are designed to play on the senses of players. With bright flashing lights, bonus screens, numerous reels, and hundreds of themes. Coin catch pans along with the coins are specifically designed to make loud sound so that players are always hearing the sound of a win.

Playing online slots is rapidly becoming as popular as land-based games as quality software packages develop more realistic games. Multiple pay-line games with the similar bonus screens that land-based players have come to love are becoming more and more frequent.
